Introduction Originally known as Prairie Rapids Crossing, Waterloo is nestled on the banks of the Cedar River. The city was named Waterloo to give recognition to the battle where Napoleon was defeated by the British troops. This name was suggested by Charles Mullan who settled on the east bank of the Cedar River in 1851. It is the county seat of Black Hawk County. Summers are warm and humid but pleasant enough for outdoor activities. Fall is beautiful with colorful trees blooming all around.
Waterloo is located in northeast Iowa, nine miles (14 kilometers) southeast of Cedar Falls, 53 miles (85 kilometers) northwest of Cedar Rapids, and 127 miles (204 kilometers) northeast of Des Moines.
